How to Size a Lamella Clarifier for Industrial Wastewater: Flow, Solids, Plate Area and Sludge Load
Size a lamella clarifier from peak flow, settling behavior, projected plate area, solids load and sludge withdrawal - not tank volume alone.
A lamella clarifier uses inclined settling surfaces to provide more effective settling area within a compact footprint.
That advantage only helps when the solids actually settle.
The design question is:
What projected settling area and sludge-removal capacity are required for the real flow and solids load?
Start With Settling Behavior
Collect wastewater source, TSS, floc type, pH, chemical program and settling-test results.
A lamella clarifier should not be selected only because the project wants a compact tank.
1. Use Peak Flow
Check average flow, peak flow, recycle flow, batch discharges and future expansion.
The clarification zone must pass the highest realistic hydraulic condition.
2. Distinguish Tank Footprint From Projected Area
Review plate angle, spacing, length, number of plates and projected horizontal area.
Do not compare two lamella units only by outside dimensions.
3. Check Surface Loading
Preliminary sizing relates hydraulic flow to effective settling area.
The acceptable loading depends on floc settling, wastewater type, inlet distribution and solids load.
Do not copy a clean-water value directly into an industrial wastewater project.
4. Check Solids Loading
A clarifier may be hydraulically adequate but overloaded with solids.
Estimate influent TSS, chemical sludge generation and daily dry-solids mass.
5. Check Inlet Distribution
Poor inlet distribution can cause short-circuiting, floc breakup and localized high velocity.
Uniform flow into the plate zone is essential.
6. Check Plate Spacing and Fouling
Fibers, grease, sticky floc or precipitates can block narrow passages.
Plate geometry should match the solids characteristics and cleaning plan.
7. Check Sludge Hopper and Withdrawal
Review hopper geometry, sludge pump, withdrawal frequency, valve arrangement and downstream storage.
Accumulated sludge can rise or re-enter the treated water if removal is poor.
8. Verify Chemical Pretreatment
If clarification depends on coagulation/flocculation, poor floc cannot be corrected by the plate pack.
Use jar testing where chemical treatment is part of the process.
9. Check Outlet Collection
Uneven weir or launder loading can create local hydraulic overload.
The outlet system should withdraw clarified water uniformly.
10. Plan Cleaning Access
Provide access for inspection, washdown and module maintenance.
Industrial clarifiers should be maintainable without difficult disassembly.
Practical Lamella Clarifier Checklist

|---|---|---|
Flow | Average and peak | Hydraulic loading |
TSS | Influent and target | Solids duty |
Settling Test | Settling/floc behavior | Process fit |
Plate Area | Projected area | Settling capacity |
Plate Geometry | Spacing and angle | Fouling risk |
Chemicals | Coagulant/polymer | Floc formation |
Sludge | Dry solids, withdrawal | Hopper/pump |
Inlet | Distribution | Short-circuiting |
Outlet | Weir/launder | Uniform withdrawal |
Common Lamella Sizing Mistakes
Sizing From Tank Volume
Projected settling area is the stronger basis.
Ignoring Peak Flow
Hydraulic surges can cause carryover.
Ignoring Solids Load
Sludge handling can become the bottleneck.
Using Lamella for Poorly Settling Floc
DAF or another separation method may fit better.
Ignoring Fouling
Plate spacing must match the solids.
Technical Basis
Clarifier design guidance emphasizes surface loading, inlet distribution and solids behavior. Plate settlers increase effective area but still depend on settling performance and uniform hydraulics.
The practical rule is:
size projected settling area from real flow and settling behavior, then verify solids load, sludge withdrawal and fouling risk.
